At its core, cryptocurrency is a peer-to-peer digital payment system that doesn’t rely on banks to verify transactions. Bitcoin is the first decentralized cryptocurrency was proposed and published by a programmer (or group of) working under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto following the 2008 Great Recession whose root cause was the reckless lending instigated by banks and the government.

1. That it’s possible to have real-life transactions without the use of fiat;
2. Real-world use cases and increased value encourages mass adoption.

With the current progress in blockchain technology, cryptocurrency integration can now be used for day-to-day spending. Here are some of the companies that allowed the use of $BTC or other cryptocurrencies into their payment systems:

• Microsoft accepting $BTC since 2014 – can be used to purchase Xbox and Windows Phone
• CheapAir claims to be the first online travel agency to accept $BTC starting November 2013 and has expanded to hotel reservations in February 2014.
• Shopify accepts Bitcoin and 300+ other cryptocurrencies as a form of “alternative payment methods”
• Planet Express in California accepts Bitcoin as payment for their forwarding service since 2017
• PayPal
• AT & T became the first major mobile carrier (in US) to accept $BTC as payment
